Family lawyers, including OGR Stock Denton’s Graeme Fraser, call for better protections for cohabiting couples
Fourteen high-profile family lawyers, including OGR Stock Denton Solicitors partner, Graeme Fraser, have signed a letter published in the Guardian, calling for improved rights for cohabitants.
The letter argues that cohabiting couples and their families are losing out as a consequence of the perpetuating myth of ‘common law marriage’, which whilst referred to in official documents has no status in law.
The signatories write “As a crucial step towards securing fair outcomes for millions of people, we urge the government to take steps to bring forward, as a minimum, basic protections for cohabiting couples.”
They go on to encourage the government to raise awareness of the ‘common law marriage’ myth.
